Giannis Stamatiou –Sporos- was one of the most gifted soloists of bouzouki ever.
The nickname “Sporos” (: seed), which became his identity for all those years,
was an idea of Manolis Chiotis. He took part as main performer in the recordings
of hundreds of songs of well-known artists such as
Str. Pagioumtzis, M. Ninou, St. Haskil, Th. Eygenikou, S. Bellou, St. Kazantzidis,
Pr. Tsaousakis, Gr. Bithikotsis, M. Linda, P. Gabala, K. Grey, G. Lydias,
A. Chrysafi, M. Melagias, Z. Nachi, R. Ntalia, P. Panou, Z. Sapountzaki,
St. Tzouanakos, T. Marouda, T. Voskopoulos, Marinella, and others.
He had a close collaboration with Sp. Peristeris, V. Tsitsanis, G. Mitsakis,
M. Chiotis, G. Tatassopoulos, G. Zambetas, B. Bakalis, Ch. Kolokotroni,
Th. Derveniotis, P. Petsa, G. Klouvatos, St. Chrysini, St. Tzouanakos,
M. Chatzidakis, G. Mouzakis, G. Katsaros, G. Vellas, Z. Iakovidis, and others.
Apart from discography, he appeared in the same time in public centers
of Athens such as Tabou, Tzimis the fat, Triana toy Chila, Kalamatianou,
Louzitania, Rozemari from 1952 to 1958 with P. Panou, Christakis,
Anna Bella, Sevas Chanoum, K. Kaplanis, Ap. Chatzichristos and others.
After he returned from America, appeared in the following night amusement centers:
“Pagosmio” (: Worldwide), “Palia Athina” (: Old Athens), “Mostrou”, “Deilina”,
“Diogenis”, “Fantasia” with Gr. Bithikotsis, B. Tsetini, L. Diamanti,
T. Voskopoulos, Marinella, M. Linta, R. Vlachopoulou and others.
He thrived in America from 1958 to 1980. Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley,
Sami Davis Junior and Din Martin all listened to his songs. He died in 2011.
